Which is more important: Reading to learn or learning to read?

  1. Good to see you in the blogosphere! You will learn a number of interesting things that you can do in this space.

I think both phases are equally important. Can one read to learn if he/she has not been successful at acquiring early reading skills? And how useful is one's reading ability if he/she cannot use it to learn new information or to think critically. We really do not want to have a cadre of students who just possess reading ability but cannot use this ability to navigate texts and explore their world.

  2. I quite agree that boththese phrases are equally important, especially to us as teachers. We must recognize and appreciate the differences and the similarities in the two phrases. Our students depend on us to know the differrences, even as they donot know it for themselves!
